The Night

For Sunday Scribblings. Okay, this isn't technically night but any time after school feels like night to me.

It’s Five O’clock in the Afternoon

And the day becomes velvet.
The slippery silk of day
softens into a merlot twilight.

I change from school clothes
into my pajamas,
the navy blue ones with stars and moons.
Then I slip my feet into puffy slippers
and go downstairs to putter.

I move slowly through
the thick after-school air,
let it buoy me as I bump
against its soft edges.

A little cooking
A little reading
and a glass of wine.

Five o’clock embraces
me in its flannel arms.

there is a flannel/velvet feel to this time of day, especially after one which stretches our energy beyond it's capacity.

I can completely relate to this scene......lovely merlot twilights with wine sipping and dinner making.

here's to jammies with stars and moons.

ps. thank you so much for your feedback on my piece this week. it's been a while since i took part in Sunday Scribblings.

I love how you gave the time of day a feeling - a cozy place to wrap yourself in for nourishment. Make me yearn for a time that embraces me in flannel arms as well!

I loved the pajamas with stars and moons. And the puffy slippers. Makes me drowsy just to think of it.

Wonderful post.

I thought this was so beautifully descriptive....merlot twilight...very, very nice.

nothing like the comfort of one's own pajamas....

What a wonderful, comforting poem...and I'm in my jammies as I type this! I sure can relate. I especially loved how you started the poem:

And the day becomes velvet.
The slippery silk of day
softens into a merlot twilight.

Beautiful!

I relate! You know I get back from school around 1:30 pm. And I truly feel it is night!

LOL!

This is neat. Good, inspired combinations of words appealed and made such a simple, cozy time seem like the best idea in the world.
