December Stillness
I wake up early
and cleave my way
through the thick,
black morning
on this, one of the shortest
days of the year.
I glance outside
and the street light
illuminates the fresh
inch of snow we received
during the night.
I have laundry to do,
gifts to wrap,
a floor to wash,
papers to correct.
But, I sit
in my La Z Boy
and watch the neighbor's
chimney breathe.
I glance up
at the white bread
of the sky. I glance
down at the white
bread of the snow.
Then just sit
in the still sandwich
of a December
dawn.

What beautiful imagery - 'the breathing chimney'..the 'sandwich' of snow..you captured how it feels to be 'snowed in' just perfectly..Jae
I really liked this poem - you excelled yourself - and how beautiful those still moments are.
What a sandwich! I am enjoying the lingering taste..
dead woman and her stillnessin a cold december morning
We've got a white-bread sky here too, at the moment. Well written.
Ooh I love this! :) We never get snow where I live and this week has been quite hot, so it's nice to sit in the air conditioning and imagine your quiet snow sandwich :)
Linda, This is beautiful. Papers can wait, they'll still be there tomorrow. :) mmmmmm.
How lovely! Now I'll be looking at breathing chimneys.
Wish could be around snow.. and enjoy the way you do.. well written..
awesome...words of a true writer. excellent writing
I had to come back and read it again. Once in awhile a poem, a story comes that is way above what the rest of us have written. Your words, your poem is one of those times.
It was beautiful and made me smile. All day I'll be remembering, and tomorrow morning I think I'll look up at my sky too.
I really like this. The breathing chimney and cleaving through the dark...well done.
I like the peaceful nature of this poem and its imagery.
wonderful! thanks for sharing the morning and your poetic take on it.
Beautiful piece. Love it!
Love this. :)
The last stanza is my favourite.
Thank you for taking up the prompt.
Always amazing you hit the nail on the head! "Breathing chimney" "sandwich of snow" bred of pensive thought I'm sure! Well done. I love how you captured the busy womans syndrome in there too!

Yes, I can see how you would feel like the filling in the oreo.
