I think I've chosen
my word for the new year.
It's been slipping softly
into my thoughts
for the last few weeks
tinting each day with smiles.
I thought it would blast
into my life and slap me
in the face with its importance
while shouting how integral
it would be to how I live.
But, no, it was just a tiny
tincture dropped into my daily
living where it spread
into every crevice until
it became a map
to the answer of why
I've been so glum.
At the beach I found
a white feather by chance
and wrote my word
in the sand making
it official. Then, I took
a picture of it. Now,
it's mine. When I write
I synchronize the ups
and downs creating
balance so I don't tip
over into self-loathing.
Today, I'll print
my word, frame it,
and place it on my desk.
It will sit there
a quiet sunrise.
This is lovely, Linda. The white feather stands out as an omen of hope for a balanced year.
ReplyDeleteI love this. I choose a word each year, too. I'm enamored of the fact that you don't reveal yours...it's yours, written in sand, and on heartstrings. Just beautiful, Linda.
ReplyDeleteI will write mine in the sand as well. Wonderful write!
ReplyDeleteLove the enigma you have created here, Linda. I love the thought of choosing a word for the new year, I must give this some thought. Happy New Year.

I like the idea of the word as a "quiet sunrise" giving hope to each new day of the year.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this. Although peeved you didn't reveal it, I do understand it is yours alone.
ReplyDeleteLovely poem. Glad your word gives you a quiet sunrise.
ReplyDeleteThat's beautiful. At lots of levels.
ReplyDeleteSuch a fine tumble of words..the white feather almost a physical representation of that magical word..delicate..strong..found..and am very glad the word is just for you too..
