Worry for Sunday Scribblings

Did you ever have anyone
hand you a glass of wine
in an expensive wine glass

thin as a skim of ice
on a pond? You hold
that stem like a delicate

rose. That’s how I feel
about my mom, now. I
love the wine, but

the container is just so fragile
that I’m afraid she’ll break.
I hug her as gently as possible.

  1. Oh my Linda I was not expecting that! What a powerful metaphor.... sad yet beautiful tribute to a mom. I hear the pain in this poem.... enjoy the wine my dear.... sip slowly, take in each nuance, each note until it's finished.

    Big Hugs Sherrie

  11. I felt the emotion in your words, and understand the worry. It is hard watching our parents grow old. Once strong people turned fragile by age. Knowing we will one day...

  14. wow, great metaphor!

i have a friend who says he wants to age like old wine.. so that's fitting too. meaning age gracefully.. the wine tastes better the older it is.. it's better quality.

  15. This touched my heart. I lost my Mom some years ago. She lived in another state and I went to stay with her shortly after she found she had inoperable cancer and we would lie in bed and talk at night. Your poem brought back that remembrance. Thank you.

  17. This is beautiful.
Watching our loved ones age and become fragile is so painful. You probably know i worked in a hospital/ aged care unit, and watched this over and over again, it is heart rending and different people react to it in different ways but is very very hard to watch someone go down that path when we love them so much. Hugs.

  19. Dear Linda,
This was painfully sad and beautiful, I write with tears in my eyes and a visceral ache in my stomach.
I'm partial to these lines: "I love the wine, but/the container is just so fragile"... and your love shows strong to the last line.
    I hope she'll feel better.
